In the fifth season of shut up and listen!<\/i> the festival motto duos \u2013 doubles \u2013 dialogues<\/i> sets the scene for works of music and sound art resulting from the collaboration of two artists or, in the broadest sense, the combination of two sound-producing entities. Though too small to pass for an ensemble, they reveal that the essence of intense dialogue is often contained in one-on-one interaction. Polar, complementary or symbiotic, the conceptual approaches are just as varied as the genres.<\/span><\/p>

Duos are less common in sound installation art, but the Berlin-based artists Serge Baghdassarians & Boris Baltschun are an exception to the rule. Visitors can experience their sound installation what does a bird know about jetlag?<\/i> in a basement space at raum35. In contrast, duos in the electronic and improvised music scene are much more prevalent. This year\u2019s lineup includes the laptop duo Sure <\/i>(Hui Ye & Veronika Mayer), the electroacoustic duo blauwurf <\/i>(Eric Sch\u00f6rghofer & Michael Zacherl) and guitarist Burkhard Stangl with clarinettist Kai Fagaschinski, a collaboration that produced the album Musik \u2013 Ein Portr\u00e4t in Sehnsucht<\/i> in 2009. Contemporary instrumental music duets are also quite common, for example this year the duo Double Image<\/i> \u2014 Gisela Mashayekhi-Beer (flute) & Berndt Thurner (percussion) \u2014 is performing the composition eine Woche + eine Nacht<\/i> by Nader Mashayekhi. Artfully representing the Wienerlied genre we have Die Strottern<\/i> \u2013 Klemens Lendl (violin and vocals) & David M\u00fcller (guitar and vocals).
